Folk-rocker Vic Chesnutt, 45, dies in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Vic Chesnutt, the folk-rocker whose sometimes dark reflections on life were influenced in part by a car wreck that left him paralyzed, has died. He was 45.

Family friend Christina Stuckey, who answered the phone at Chesnutt's home, confirmed the death to The Associated Press. Chesnutt's record label, Constellation Records, said in a statement on its Web site that Chesnutt died on Christmas

Venezuelan funk band to play with L.A. Philharmonic (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Los Amigos Invisibles, the Venezuelan funk band from Caracas that relocated to Brooklyn more than eight years ago, will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2011. But the party has already started, with the group enjoying an ever-growing following throughout Mexico, South America and its adopted home country.

In the last three months the band's sixth studio album, "Commercial," was released simultaneously

Various Artists - Supperclub Naivety

Dutch DJ Marcello's music policy revolves around celebrating life and accentuating the positive, an attitude it's hard to criticise without sounding curmudgeonly. Why it does seem fair to take issue with his modus operandi, however, is that it results in long stretches of his addition to Supperclub's Ninesins series conforming to the most dispiriting aspects of chillout and cocktail bar house music: politeness, complacency, anonymity and derivativeness.

Various Artists, Tighten Up Volume 2

To celebrate its 40th anniversary Trojan have given their most renowned collection a deluxe makeover. Furnished with an extra disc of material, Tighten Up Volume 2 remains a good entry-point for people who like the sound of reggae and love to dance – just as it was four decades ago.

The UK was then the second biggest market for reggae (unlike today where it lags behind continental Europe). The most zealous converts were the

Bill Frisell, The Best Of Bill Frisell - Volume 1: Folk Songs

The first in a new series compiling and celebrating the work of Bill Frisell is an easy thing to review. Two words will sum up anything the exemplary guitarist has turned his hand to: 'very good'. But when it comes to his explorations in Americana as on this collection, it's very very good. If you don't already own most of these tracks, beware. Because when you do hear them you'll have to go out and buy all the parent albums that they're culled

Various Artists, Confessions of a Shopaholic

Can't wait for Sex and the City II? Not a problem: here's Confessions Of A Shopaholic, Sophie Kinsella's chick-lit romantic comedy about a fashion-obsessed financial journalist whose spending habits land her in trouble with, ahem, hilarious consequences.

Happily, Confessions' soundtrack scores considerably higher than the shambles assembled to accompany the adventures of Carrie Bradshaw last summer. The tone is sassy and sharp –

Various Artists, Folk Awards 2009

As the CD compilation market grows tinier and more fractured, the annual collection that accompanies the annual BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards becomes more indispensable. Like the Rough Trade Counter Culture CD which brings together the best in indie, this 24-track gathering of all the nominees is the one-stop shop for the folk uninitiated and a perfect round-up for the aficionado.

Compiled by the show's Executive Producer, John Leonard,
